The Best Tenner I Ever Spent
Dylan and Daisy (or wibbly and wobbly)
I thought you might be interested to read an article I wrote for our staff magazine - featuring two kittens that are now called Dylan and Daisy - but you affectionately called them wibbly and wobbly…they are such a delight - Jackie Kimberley.
"It's not a king's ransom these days but £10 can still be a memorable amount to spend… This time Sandwell Today asks Jackie Kimberley of Social Inclusion: what's the best tenner you ever spent? I've invested £10 in two kittens: Dylan and his sister Daisy. Both suffer from a condition similar to cerebral palsy which means they walk about in an apparent state of perpetual drunkenness. Climbing stairs is an arduous task which challenges their dexterity and tenacity - for every two steps forward they fall back one! But they will not be beaten. Their steps are purposeful and their mis-judged jumps are a joy to watch though my anxieties cause me to act as an uninvited safety-net to cushion their unscheduled falls.
Eating is also a hit and miss affair as their heads bob about targeting their food: indignantly walking away with food on their faces, unperturbed by the bemused expression of onlookers. So what have I learnt from these two adorable characters? That their disability, even assuming they are aware of it, does not deter them from enjoying life and seeking and overcoming new challenges. My one regret? That I can't do anything to stop the pedigree breeding programmes which impact adversely on the elderly, sick, disabled, and genetically impure cats and dogs who are considered second class citizens. Often they languish in rescue centres, or worst still are put down, due to the perception that they cannot be found homes.
Dylan and Daisy dispel this myth and are wonderful ambassadors for these groups of socially excluded sentient creatures. The comfort that Dylan and Daisy bring is priceless and £10 represents a worthwhile investment given the years of companionship that one can expect. However long or short our relationship, I will always treasure the joy and privilege of knowing them."
There are no new mature cats available for the moment, although we have plenty of feral cats that need a good home.
